Bright Blue Congo from Beds
According
to Beds-based Parripak Foods, one of the largest processors of a wide
variety of fresh vegetables to chilled-food manufacturers in the country,
the new Blue Congo potato can trace its ancestry back to the ‘original
potatoes’ that Sir Walter Raleigh brought back from his expeditions!
This bright blue coloured variety tastes like a normal potato but has nutty
undertones and is very popular in Scandinavian countries, particularly used
for piping for decorative dishes.
Parripak’s
product development manager, Adam Rigarlsford, said. “The yield for
the Blue Congo is typically 12 tonnes an acre and it is a ‘free’ variety
which means that you can keep your own seed and grow it yourself.”
This
new variety is available from October through to May, and can be mashed,
boiled and roasted. The blue
potato is currently grown on contract for a leading high street retailer,
and Parripak says that the novel colour has proved extremely popular with
customers who are looking for something a little more exotic.
