EU sugar reform evidence
The Environment Food & Rural Affairs Committee is looking at the
proposed reform of the EU sugar regime. It recognises that there are two
distinct aspects to the discussions on the future of the regime: the
perspective of the EU and UK sugar industry, and the impact in the
international sphere, taking into account the concerns of cane sugar
producers in developing countries. The Committee is addressing the first
aspect - the impacts on the EU and UK sugar industry, and has received
evidence on the following key points:
• the extent and timescale of the proposed price reductions
• the extent to which the proposed reductions in price will be
transmitted to the consumer
• the implications for UK agriculture, with particular regard to
possible alternative land uses
• the proposed arrangements for compensating EU producers
• the changes to the quota arrangements
• the potential impact of the reforms on UK-based sugar beet processors
and cane refiners, and the long-term consequences for their industries.
