FoodFen's Burall PlasTec wins Queen's Award for Enterprise

FoodFen company Burall PlasTec Ltd has earned royal approval for its pioneering work to win a Queen’s Award for Enterprise.

The prestigious award recognises outstanding innovation in the manufacture of transparent cartons from polypropylene.

The new system pioneered by Burall PlasTec, part of the employee-owned Burall Group, was the first of its kind to use specially developed glue in an automated process.

As a result, Burall PlasTec has successfully extended its reputation as a specialist plastic printer to include contemporary packaging solutions, producing appealing polypropylene glued cartons for favourite brands like Nestlé, Dyson, Boots, Superdrug, Marks & Spencer and many more.

Designers and brand owners prefer polypropylene to PVC because it looks better and offers a more sophisticated range of finishes. This new polypropylene solution is also great news for the environment because along with the glue, it’s fully recyclable.

Prior to Burall PlasTec’s breakthrough, existing technology did not allow high speed gluing of polypropylene cartons, so packaging had to be hand-assembled using interlocking tabs and slots.

Burall PlasTec worked closely with an adhesive manufacturer to develop a new type of safe, transparent glue that could be applied by machine at high speed for large volumes. The company then established a completely automated polypropylene carton-making facility within its print business, enabling clients to cost-effectively use polypropylene packaging for a whole range of products, from confectionery and gifts to cosmetics and toiletries.

Developing a completely automated solution for sticking polypropylene cartons together has boosted productivity and increased sales. Moreover, adhesive joining is promoting greater versatility in design and more environmentally-friendly packaging. This is because thinner polypropylene can now be constructed with no loss of strength.

Managing Director of Burall PlasTec, Jon Allen, said: "We are absolutely delighted that in our drive to innovate and meet our clients’ needs, we have been rewarded not only with substantial commercial success but also with the kudos of a highly sought-after Queen’s Award for Enterprise."
